Fashion Technology - Nokia vs Apple
I love my Sony Ericsson w810i and that is why I decided to purchase an iPod Touch instead of the iPhone. Although, I’m beginning to think the iPod Touch was an impulse purchase, because the Sony Ericsson w810i is just as good (minus the big touch screen, free web access, or all things wonderful about the iPod Touch – okay the iPod Touch is definitely better than my phone).
Now, I love, love, love my iPod Touch, but I’m beginning to wonder about Steve Jobs intention. In his former days Steve Jobs had the opportunity to become as dominating as Microsoft, but unfortunately his ego got the best of him, hence he left Apple to pursue other opportunities such as being the founder of Pixar.
Since his return to Apple Steve Jobs has salvaged and repositioned Apple and finally we are up to speed with the new second-generation iPhone that had caused quite a stir during the first day’s release. The consumer iPhone discovery, crash, and resurrection – all in one weekend. Toasted?
So – Apple is now targeting corporate markets to become the next Microsoft leaving their original niche (artists); well, not leaving I guess, more like expanding their niche. Which, in a lot of cases, does not always work. However, there are some companies that are good with maintaining their niche and retargeting consumers (ahem, like Microsoft with their Xbox and Zune).
Okay, wait, this is about FASHION not TECHNOLOGY, so where am I going with this? Because everyone wants an iPhone (every Tom, Dick, and Harry or Harriet out there) what’s to individualism anymore? And what of copycat iPhones?
Now, I bring to the table the Nokia N95 (or the newer and sexier version N96 not offered in North American…yet) targeted towards a unique market - artists knowns as Photographers. (I know, it’s almost like Apple’s old niche - but does this make Nokia a copycat? Or just better?)
Sure, it doesn’t look as sexy and sleek as the iPhone, but it seems like an awfully powerful phone surpassing iPhone G3’s 2.0 mega pixels camera at 5.0 mega pixels. Read specs here for the N95 and here for the N96, now compare it to the iPhone 3G specs here .
Besides, isn’t the N96 the same phone that The Dark Knight uses? Now that’s cool.
